Hydrogen Health: What Molecular Hydrogen Inhalation Is and Is Not

What is being inhaled

A hydrogen-oxygen generator splits purified water by electrolysis into a gas mixture of roughly two parts hydrogen to one part oxygen, often called Brown's gas. The blend is delivered through a nasal cannula or mask while the user sits or rests.

This is different from hydrogen-rich water, where a much smaller quantity of dissolved gas is swallowed. Inhalation delivers gas continuously for the length of the session.

The proposed mechanism

Molecular hydrogen is the smallest molecule there is, so it diffuses readily across biological membranes and is not blocked by the barriers that stop larger compounds.

The mechanism most often described in the literature is selective antioxidant activity: hydrogen is proposed to neutralise the most damaging reactive species while leaving the signalling molecules the body uses deliberately untouched. This is an area of active research rather than settled science.
