PEMF Therapy Explained: How Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields Support Recovery

What is PEMF therapy?

PEMF stands for pulsed electromagnetic field therapy. A coil built into a mat, ring or applicator emits low-frequency magnetic pulses that pass through clothing, skin and bone without heating the tissue.

Because the pulses are magnetic rather than electrical, nothing needs to touch the skin directly. Most people describe the sensation as a soft tapping or a mild muscular twitch at higher intensities, and feel nothing at all at low settings.

How a typical session works

A session usually runs between eight and thirty minutes. The user lies on a full-body mat or places a local applicator over a specific joint, and the operator selects a frequency programme and intensity.

Frequency, waveform and intensity are the three variables that matter. Lower frequencies are generally used for relaxation and sleep programmes, while higher intensities are typically reserved for musculoskeletal and post-training recovery work.

PEMF is non-invasive and does not use ionising radiation. Even so, anyone with an implanted electronic device such as a pacemaker or a cochlear implant, anyone who is pregnant, and anyone with active bleeding or an implanted drug pump should speak with their physician before starting.

Choosing a machine

The main decisions are intensity range, applicator selection, programme library and whether the system is intended for a single household or a busy clinic. Higher intensity systems shorten session times and suit multi-client use; lighter systems are easier to place in a bedroom and cost considerably less.
