External Counter Pulsation: Non-invasive circulatory support

March 11, 20265 min read

What the External Counter Pulsation is

ECP is an FDA-cleared and Medicare-approved, non-invasive treatment for ischemic and other circulatory disorders. Three inflatable cuffs on the legs and buttocks inflate and deflate in precise sequence during the resting phase of the heart cycle.

The sequenced inflation returns blood toward the heart during diastole and releases pressure just before the next beat, reducing the work the heart must do while increasing flow through the coronary and peripheral circulation.

A typical course runs across several weeks of daily one-hour sessions. Patients lie down for the session and can read or listen throughout.
